How to Tell If a Canary Is Male or Female: 5 Proven Methods

How to Tell If a Canary is Male or Female

How to tell if a canary is male or female is one of the most common questions new canary owners ask — and it’s genuinely tricky before a bird reaches adulthood or shows clear breeding-season signs. After 15 years of keeping and breeding canaries, I’ve relied on a handful of methods that work reliably even for beginners. Here are the 5 best ways to tell, ranked from easiest to most advanced.

What if you are looking for a canary pair and want to opt for the right male and a female canary other than a breeding season. Or canaries have not reached their adultery and not showing a sign either male singing or a female laying eggs.

So, how to know the gender of a canary bird? Here are the 5 best Methods to distinguish.

  • 1st Method (How to tell if a canary is male or female )

This is the first method for differentiating a male and female canary. You can observe the male and female canary through their appearance. As you can see in the image below:

male vs female canary eye ring comparison

In this image, you can see the male canary where you have to check the level of eyes with a horizontal line through the end of the beak of the canary. From the starting point of the beak of a canary and going through the eye, the level of the line or beak and the eye will be aligned in the center. Which is one of the basic signs that a canary would be a male canary.

In case, the line is just going down from the center of the eye or whole eye, it is a female canary. As you can easily see in the image above.

This is the first method which may not be easier for beginners at first however, practicing it will be the main and absolute method to distinguish the gender of a canary bird.

  • 2nd  Method (How to tell if a canary is male or female )

The second method while distinguishing the gender of canary birds is also related to their appearance like the first one above. The first method was through the head and beak method, but the second method is through the tail method.

To know the difference between male and female canary through the tail, just check the image below:

In this image, you can see that a male canary has an arrow finishing feathers in the middle of the tail which is a single collective aligned.

But, the female canary has two separate combinations of feathers aligning to the tip of the tail.

This second method is also very easy to know the gender of canary birds and very useful for beginners as well.

3rd Method (How to tell if a canary is male or female )

This is the third method of knowing the gender of a male or female canary. This method works best during the breeding behavior when the adult male and female canary get ready for breeding seasons.

However, this method can also be used to determine the gender of male and female canaries other than during the breeding season.

In this method, the canary is held in the hand and turned down. As you can see in the image. After turning it down, there are two ways to do it properly.

  1. The first one is to blow the feathers gently around the cloaca area and see the cloaca of the bird.
  2. The second method is to wet the area of the cloaca and see the difference.

If the cloaca area of a canary has a prominent tip or bulge rising above from the bottom then it is a male canary which is seen in this image below;

And, if it has a normal and slight cloaca plain to the abdomen of a bird then it is a female canary. As seen below in the image.

4th  Method (How to tell if a canary is male or female )

Well, if you have got a pair of canary birds and got the first clutch of chicks. But, you don’t know yet which chick would be a male and female or want to differentiate the chick’s gender at the earlier stage.

So, here is the method which allows you to distinguish between male and female canaries at an early stage.

As you can see in the image above, the male chick will have a V-shaped bottom/tail and a female canary chick will have a U-shaped bottom/tail.

This method can be useful once the chicks are about 3 to 4 days and have a clear body appearance without feathers.

5th  Method (How to tell if a canary is male or female )

The next method is a common method to distinguish between male and female canaries. If you have a young canary and don’t know its gender of it. So, you can observe the activity of the canary and know the gender of the canary.

The young male canary will start chirping regularly and will be active in the cage. Later on, it will start singing regularly without stopping and clearing the sound.

Whereas; the female young will sing a single tone like in the video below, and won’t be chirping regularly.

Trait Male Canary Female Canary
Singing Sings often, loud and melodic Rarely sings; mostly chirps
Coloration Brighter, more vivid plumage Paler, more muted tones
Eye-ring shape Line runs from center of eye Line runs down from whole eye
Tail feathers Single aligned arrow shape Two separate feather alignments
Cheek patches More prominent, brighter Less visible
Nesting behavior Builds nest, doesn’t lay eggs Builds nest and lays eggs
Vent/cloaca (breeding season) More pointed, protruding Flatter, rounder

FAQs:

Can female canaries sing?

Yes, occasionally — but female canaries sing far less often and less melodically than males. If your canary sings loudly and regularly, it’s almost certainly male.

How accurate is DNA testing for canary gender?

DNA testing is the most reliable method, with close to 100% accuracy. It’s done via a blood or feather sample sent to a lab, and is worth the cost if you’re breeding or showing birds.

At what age can you tell a canary’s gender?

Most visual methods become reliable once a canary reaches 6-12 months and shows breeding-season traits. Before that, DNA testing is the only dependable option.

Do male and female canaries look different outside breeding season?

Color and behavior differences fade outside breeding season, making visual identification harder. This is when DNA testing is most useful.

Can a canary’s gender affect its lifespan or care needs?

No — both male and female canaries have similar lifespans and care requirements when kept healthy and well-fed.

In sum, Male canaries are usually brighter in color than female canaries. Male canary birds are more likely to sing than females.  (Check out: do female canaries sing,). Male canaries have loud and regular singing while female canaries don’t sing that much while pairing male and female canaries, they gather nesting materials during the breeding season.
